Dunlop Tyres SA

Company Profile

Dunlop Tyres is a leading global tyre manufacturing brand synonymous with innovation, performance, and an iconic motorsport heritage, since 1888. The Dunlop brand was founded by John Boyd Dunlop, a Scottish inventor and veterinary surgeon who created the world’s first pneumatic rubber tyre for his son’s tricycle. This invention transformed the way the world transported people and commodities, with a focus on providing comfort and safety to all those taking the road.

In South Africa, the proud custodian of the Dunlop brand is Sumitomo Rubber South Africa (SRSA), backed by Japanese-listed parent company Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI), premium manufacturer of automotive tyres and industrial rubber products. SRSA also manufactures and distributes the Sumitomo and Falken Tyre brands in South Africa and into the African continent.

Dunlop Tyres SA’s head office is based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, with branches in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth. Its passenger car, sport utility vehicle, light truck and truck and bus radial tyres are locally produced at their manufacturing plant in uMnambithi (formerly known as Ladysmith), Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal. SRI’s multi-billion-rand investments in tyre innovation and technology has modernised the plant, increasing its output to meet tyre market demands and demonstrates their commitment to supply the African continent.

Trusted for their quality, safety and performance, Dunlop is proud to be the Original Equipment (OE) partner of choice to leading vehicle manufacturers in South Africa where Dunlop tyres are factory fitted to new vehicles for domestic and export markets.
